31Agyness Deyn, one of fashion’s favorite new faces, is soaring to supermodel status and breaking all the rules along the way. Born Laura Hollins on February 16, 1983, in Littleborough, England, the sexy girl-next-door retired her given name at the urging of an agent. She borrowed “Agnes” from her grandmother and “Dean” from an old family name. Then her mom, a Reiki master, made a few spiritually inspired adjustments, and voilà! Agyness Deyn was born.

Agyness’ teenage years were sprinkled with the little successes and serendipitous moments you’ll find in any good superstar story. At 13 she won a modeling contest for a teen magazine (her grandmother submitted her photo) and in 1999 was named the Face of Rossendale by the local paper. Wise beyond her years, however, the young stunner turned down offers from modeling agencies to complete her studies. Then, while serving up fish and chips at the Village Chippy, Agyness met kindred spirit Henry Holland and the two became fast friends.

In 2004 the pair set off for London, where, living off beans and toast, they established themselves as fixtures on the London fashion scene—Holland with his iconic House of Holland slogan T-shirts, and Deyn as fashion’s new It girl.

In her breakout year, Agyness graced the pages of the world’s premier magazines and walked runways for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, and Zac Posen, but it was the blue-eyed beauty’s off-runway style that really got people talking. Her shocking platinum crop and unconventional menswear-inspired street style has earned her best-dressed titles and countless young followers. And, while some refer to her as the new Kate Moss, the punk pixie is anything but—she rocks a refreshing singular style all her own.

In 2007, Vogue deemed Deyn one of the “world’s next top supermodels,” and so far they seem to be right—Deyn is less fairy tale than burgeoning empire. As fame comes her way, it’s clear Deyn knows who she is as she continues to push the limits with that in-your-face style. As the face of brands like Burberry, Hugo Boss, and Anna Sui, the 2007 Model of the Year remains self-possessed and her quirky rebellious style is certainly intact.13

Like many of her supermodel predecessors, Agyness is no one-trick pony. She and pal Holland have announced plans for a collaborative jewelry collection, and in May 2008 she guest-edited i-D magazine. The New York transplant is also a singer—she fronted the single “Who” by Five O’Clock Heroes and recently formed her own band, Gene Jacket. And Agyness’ interest in music doesn’t end there: She’s engaged to Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr.

As Deyn continues to reveal her seemingly never-ending talents, there’s little doubt this edgy one-of-a-kind is here to stay.
